What Mare Read in 2025

This year I read 79 books/novella’s, down quite a bit from last year. I spent a lot of time during the late summer and fall editing the book I’m writing, so that obliterated a chunk of my reading time… When I decided to do another revision on the book, all those hours spent on editing seemed like a waste, but I learned a lot about my own writing foibles, so not a total squandering of my time. The revising continues…

I keep lists of books I want to read everywhere ~ one on my phone Reminders list, one on the phone Notes, plus an Excel spreadsheet ~ LOL! The Reminders list is titled B&N and comes in handy when Barnes & Noble runs their 25% off pre-order sales, which are almost as exciting to me as the Scholastic book sales at school many moons ago. I love the anticipation of getting a new book in the mail weeks or months later ~ it’s always good to have something to look forward to! 😊 The 25% preorder sale is on now until 1/1/26, for B&N Rewards members.

I ran through the two Barnes & Noble book journals (See the 2024 post) I used to record and review the books I read, so I bought a pretty notebook (below, right). The journal only allowed one page per book, with specific information to fill out and a star rating system ~ not much room to write my thoughts. Since the notebook I’m using now is just simple, lined pages, I can write as much as I want about each book without squishing my writing and sometimes adding sticky notes. Loving the freedom! YAY!

What Mare Read in 2024

I can’t believe I read 94 books and 2 short stories in 2024!

I read quite a bit on the Kindle phone app, so I sneak in reading time on the treadmill at the gym, waiting in lines and in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep but don’t want to turn the light on. So, I think my reading time is probably around 25% more than if I just read paper books. When I had a long commute, I didn’t have as much time to read paper books but listening to books on CD kept me sane — and, yes, “listening” to books counts as “reading” to me, because it’s all about the story, not about the delivery.

I left one or two out of the list that I finished reading but didn’t really like and I won’t mention the books that I didn’t finish reading (DNF). DNF is so subjective – sometimes you’re not in the mood for the subject matter, you find the writing disappointing or the characters or story just don’t spark your interest – so why bum a writer out by giving a bad review when maybe it really is just YOU…

Listing out all the books I’ve read in 2024 has been an interesting exercise. I read 48 cozy mysteries, fully half of my reads this year. Autobiographies are not usually my thing, but I read 8. I usually read a lot more Young Adult but I only see one on the list! This must be rectified in 2025! It also struck me that I don’t care what category a book is in – I just read what interests me – so when I was trying to categorize some of these books, I had to look them up on Amazon!

Children and Young Adult Fiction Recommendations

In my last post, Gray Hair Does Not Equal Grandma, I mentioned reading middle grade and young adult novels.  Here a few of my favorites from the last few years.

The Silent Lee books by Alex Hiam

Middle grade books with a strong female lead and lots of action.  Silent lives in modern day Boston.  Every morning she leaves by the side door of her Aunt Gen’s house to attend The Girl’s Academy of Latin and Alchemy in the early 20th century.  Her two worlds collide in adventures that involve men in black, horse drawn carriages and giant bee girls.
