Shirley Chester died on March 6, 2022.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph Tierno Sr. and the late Eleanor (Hayward) Tierno of Woburn Massachusetts. Shirley was born and raised in Woburn, where she graduated from Woburn High School with the class of 1951. She moved to Melrose, MA, in 1997.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Mary Carter, and her husband, Dean, of Fullerton, CA, and her brother, Joseph Tierno, Jr., of Anderson, MO. She was preceded in death by her brother, Nicholas Tierno, and his wife, Judith, of Melrose. She leaves many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was retired from Polymer Technology Corporation, a Bausch and Lomb Company, in Wilmington, MA. She had also worked at Portex, Inc., of Wilmington, MA.
She spent most of her life volunteering, starting in grammar school when she volunteered at the Woburn Public Library in the children’s room. She was active in the Girl Scouts in the Wilmington-Tewksbury area as troop leader, cookie and calendar chairman and Cadette Consultant.
She also volunteered as a crisis counselor at Melodyland Christian Center in Anaheim, CA, on their crisis hotline. More recently, she was a volunteer at the Melrose Public Library and at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital gift shop as a member of their auxiliary.
Shirley was an avid reader and loved to travel, feeling especially blessed to be able to visit the South Pacific, Europe and most of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska.
Funeral Services were private and interment was in Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn, MA, where she was buried with her parents.
Memorials in her name may be made to the Melrose Public Library.
