Thursday Thoughts ~ June 18, 2026

Happy Juneteenth Eve! Oh, how I wish I could be at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago tomorrow to see this portrait in person!!

The Obama’s with Njideka Akunyili Crosby, portraitist.

The Husband and I celebrated our 46th anniversary last Sunday. Being married this long creates such an enduring, varied, emotional, amazing history. You think 24 is all grown up, but really, we were such kids! Had a nice lunch at the Stonefire Grill, then saw the play, The Book of Will, at the Curtis Theatre in Brea, CA.

Us kids! Then…

And now!

In other news, I’m on a book buying moratorium for the summer. Let me walk you through my book buying history:

At one point, I had so many books, they took up not only shelf space on dedicated book shelves, they filled the kitchen cabinets! I spent years culling, giving them to thrift stores and friends of the library bookstores. I still believe that we don’t own books, we are just their custodians for a short period, until we pass them on to new readers. After a while, my kitchen shelves held only dishes and glassware again.

I’d buy a book here and there but mostly for the next few years, I happily took full advantage of my local library for books, audiobooks, and DVD’s. But then…

The Lockdown happened. The library developed a method to distribute books ~ you’d request a book or other material and they would arrange a time to leave it on a desk in the parking lot for you to pick up. Remember, in the early days, we wanted as little contact with other people as possible. SHOUT OUT to the librarians who helped keep us safe and sane in those scary bad days!

But even with those precautions, I started buying books again. I’m sure it was as much to self-soothe and give myself book mail (see previous post 😊) as much as acquiring reading material. Even though the lockdown is over and life is pretty much back to normal, other griefs and losses keep the self-soothing going. You wouldn’t believe how my serotonin is boosted by books with sprayed edges!!! My kitchen cabinets are safe but if we have a quake any time soon, we’ll need to be excavated from the book avalanche in our bedroom! Hence, the moratorium on book purchasing!

Not that I’ll make much of a dent in the piles this summer, but I had to make an effort, right??!!

PS-Ebooks are ok because they take up no space, except in my phone/Kindle ~ LOL!

Writing

The tweaking continues. That should be done very soon ~ like this weekend-soon. Then comes the line edits. I’m studying Good Writing by Anne Lamott and her current husband, Neal Allen. Cracks me up that she calls him her “current.” The book is set up with Neal presenting and elaborating a rule. Anne adds her two cents, which is usually funnier and more casual. He comes from a more formal, editorial background, while she is a more organic, imperfect writer. Both viewpoints are useful and valid and I will be using this info to make my book, The Bonus Grave, as good as it can be.

Reading

The Astral Library by Kate Quinn

Why I read it: The description of a library where you can live in a book!

Plot: I didn’t know quite what to expect from this book. It sets you up for one story – Alix is given the chance to escape her life (she’s just lost one of her three jobs, has been asked to move out by a jealous roommate, and has had her identity stolen) by the opportunity to pick a classic book to live in. But the story takes a turn when the library is attacked. The cranky librarian reluctantly enlists the aid of Alix, who in turn brings in her designer friend, Beau, and together they fight the bad guys. And there is a dragon. To elaborate would give away too much that I, for one, found a delight to discover.

What I liked: One, it was set in Boston, my old stomping grounds 😊 And such high stakes! The majority of the “Patrons” living in books were escaping abusers, so Alix found herself protecting people as much as the books themselves. And I love Alix! As a former foster kid, you have to root for her to finally find her people and her true place in the world. This book is magical!!!

PS-Yes, I read it in LARGE PRINT ~ LOL!!!

PPS-There is a very satisfying end to an evil book banner.

Streaming/Watching

Nobody Wants This           Netflix

I’m not a huge fan of Kristen Bell, but I have to say I love her in this series, playing a podcaster named Joanne. When she meets Noah, a rabbi played by Adam Brody, both their worlds and families collide. Her sister and fellow podcaster, Morgan, resents her falling in love, particularly because their show is built around bad dates and sex. Noah’s synagogue prefers only Jewish partners, and his family, his mother especially, is skeptical of the union. Other story lines include the girls’ parents – their slightly wacky mom who’s best friends with their gay dad – and Noah’s brother and sister-in-law, a couple who have an interesting relationship arc. What I really like about this show is that when they run into problems, they don’t just gloss over them, they aren’t shy about awkwardness, jealousy, and heartbreak. And I also like that in the first two seasons there were no will-they-or-won’t they-stay-together cliff hangers. Season three starts next month ~ yay!

Till next time, be good to yourself and each other!

Delightful Book Mail!

I haven’t been so delighted with a mail delivery since Amazon sent me an order in a Marvelous Mrs. Maisel-themed box!

In early June, Edward Underhill, a trans author whose books I love, announced in his newsletter that he would be signing pre-orders of his newest book, The House of Now and Then, through Scribbles Bookshop, a signed copies only romance book store. I was bummed because I’d already pre-ordered it during a Barnes & Noble 25% off pre-order sale (raise your hand if you, too, keep a pre-order list in your phone…). But he went on to say that he’d also be signing all of his backlist. YAY!!! I own all of his previous books in paper, except his first book, Always the Almost, a queer YA story, which I’d gotten as an ebook, so I went from bummed to stoked in two seconds flat!

Yes, I really do get this excited over books 😊

To all you Knott’s Berry Farm afficionado’s, Happy Ghost Town Alive Eve! IYKYK.

Once again, I’m initiating a once a week blog. They may be a bit shorter than before… And they might not be on the same day… We’ll see. I’m retired, therefore being on a schedule is not mandatory anymore LOL! But I do miss documenting all the stories in my life ~ my own, my writing, and other peoples’ writing and entertainment. So, here we go!

Beautiful flowers on our neighborhood walk.

A Little Holiday Reading

The second of The Five Blogs of Christmas is all about the books. Who doesn’t love a holiday romance?? Here’s a few I’ve read in the last few months, with additional recommendations in links below to past holiday reading fun.

I cried through the entire first chapter. Then I belly laughed through the second. Grace lost her husband to cancer in January, then she and her kids, Ian and Bella, adopted a dog on the way home from the funeral. Henry lost his wife in a plane crash in January and he hasn’t returned to their home in 10 months. Their mother’s scheme to get them together for a ridiculous, obvious meet cute. With the theme of holiday movies for each chapter, they grow closer in some ways, largely, in the beginning, because they understand completely what the other is going through. But Henry bonds with Ian, who’s trying to win an art contest at school. Bella’s a little harder to crack, like her mother. Both have near misses with other people. And they gradually begin the process of coming back to the real, painful world. There is so much honest, real chaos in both their lives, that the other makes better. Matthew Norman writes about the messiness of relationships, both romantic and platonic, with such ease. I highly recommend all of his books!

Happy Last Friday in August Eve!

Can you believe summer as I knew it as a child of the 60’s is almost over? Nowadays, school starts in mid-August in a lot of places, including SoCal, where I live. What kind of summer vacation is that?? To be fair, they don’t generally have “snow days” or the desert equivalent here, so they get out earlier in June. But going to school while it’s still August?? Ugh…

The weather’s hot and we’re mostly hiding indoors, trying to keep the cats cool. But we did venture to Knott’s, where we had lunch after The Husband’s nearby Tuesday morning class. Took a few pics in the Mine Ride:

Welcome to When Is Summer Finally Over Eve?!

I dream of living near San Diego, maybe Oceanside or Carlsbad, where the temperature rarely goes above 80 degrees. Right now, where I am in SoCal, it’s 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Is there a patron saint of moving?? LOL! I have to say, though, painting the house light blue has made these hot days a little more bearable than the dark green 😊

I’d been concerned about our diabetic kitty, Patchwork. A month ago, her numbers were very high, and the doctor suggested adding another ¼ unit of Vetsulin, the feline equivalent of insulin, to her current dosage. Last week, we had her tested again. Monday night, we got a call letting us know her numbers were way down and within acceptable range. Whew! I had told the doctor that sometimes Patchwork gets what we call Growly (scratchy, grouchy, growls) and refuses the shot, which she had done the night before that first test. Not sure how much that affected the numbers, but I’m just happy to know she’s doing okay.

Happy Friday Eve! This used to have significance when I worked, but now it’s just a way to keep up with what day it is… LOL.

Summer is probably our least favorite season. The heat, kids out of school, and tourists crowding SoCal. And the heat… In all honesty, it’s been a fairly mild summer so far, heat-wise, but it’s still uncomfortably warm and saps our energy a bit. We’ve been boringly lazy, except for a quick trip to Knott’s after a class The Husband is taking right around the corner on Tuesday mornings. Knott’s Berry Farm, the amusement park The Husband just retired from earlier this year, is about a half hour from home, so when we’re nearby we take advantage of our lifetime passes. It gives us a chance to chat with old friends and get some steps in for the day.

Happy Sugar Diamonte’s Birthday Eve!

Sugar Diamonte is the main character in my cozy mystery series. Her birth date is 8/8/88, the same day I started the best job I ever had, at The Pennysaver, a weekly print advertising mailer in Southern California. I worked there for 27 years with the finest group of accounting folks that became family, many of them employed there as long or longer than me. It’s my little homage to them and our time together, giving Sugar a birth date so close to my heart.

Sugar looks like Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping and a pivotal scene in the book unfolds at a movie theatre after she and her neighbor, Maybelle, see The Lost City.

Thursday Thoughts ~ July 31, 2025

Happy August Eve! Can you believe July is just about over? Knock wood, the summer temps have been mild so far, but it looks like heat is on the way according to my phones’ weather app. But Mother Nature doesn’t watch the Weather Channel, so, really, anything can happen! Who could have predicted an 8.8 Russian quake that resulted in volcanic activity and a tsunami??

I had a lovely birthday last Friday. We started at The Hilbert Museum in Orange (CA). The last time we’d been there, it was housed on the campus of Chapman University. It’s since moved across the street to two connected buildings of their own and it is a beautiful space, wide open in some areas and intimate in others. And it’s free, with advance reservations. Here are some of the highlights.

This painting brought to mind The Grapes of Wrath. Turned out the artist, Emil Kosa, worked for the 20th Century Fox studios in the 30’s, when The Grapes of Wrath was filmed.

Happy Friday Eve!

The VW bus saga ended on a high note last Thursday (In case you missed it, here’s the beginning of the saga). The tow truck driver, Miguel, called to ask if he could come an hour early ~ a definite YES! He turned out to be a really nice guy, who gave us the reaction we hoped for when he realized the bus had an automatic transmission ~ he was excited to see it and understood exactly how special it was. He handled the entire operation himself, backing the bus down our driveway, and using a winch to get it onto the flatbed. We watched it drive down our street to its new adventure at the auction and hopefully, a buyer who will appreciate it as much as we did.

We dream of it being fixed up and cruisin’ around town! It was hard to see it go but it was time. If you missed The Husband’s guest post last week ~ his ode to his VW ~ here it is.
